Endoscopy Procedures

Sigmoidoscopy

Sigmoidoscopy is an examination of the lower part of the colon, i.e. the anus, rectum and sigmoid colon.

You will be positioned on your left side with your knees raised to your chest. The doctor passes the endoscope through the anal opening and into your colon as far as the sigmoid junction.

The endoscope will "blow" air into this portion of your colon to allow the doctor to have a good view. This may feel uncomfortable and give rise to some pain, which is temporary. The doctor may use instruments to obtain samples called biopsies for examination. At the end of the procedure, the doctor will remove the air. Sometimes the air is expelled naturally. Do not be embarrassed if this happens as it is expected.

Preparation for a sigmoidoscopy

You need to have your bowels emptied.

The nurse will give you an enema to assist you to empty your bowels before the procedure. Once you have done so, the doctor may begin.

You are not required to fast before a sigmoidoscopy. You do not need to change into a procedure gown as your clothing can be adjusted for the procedure.
