| Gastroscopy |
| |
|
| Gastroscopy is an examination of the oesophagus,
stomach and the first part of the small intestine, called the duodenum. |
| |
| The nurse will spray
the back of your throat with an anaesthetic. This gives a numbing
effect so that you will not gag when the gastroscope is passed
into your mouth. You may swallow this anaesthetic when the nurse
tells you to. A mouth-guard will be placed between your teeth
to keep your mouth open throughout the procedure. |
|
|
| |
| You will lie on your
left side for the examination. In this position, you will find
that your saliva will flow out from the side of your mouth.
This is expected so do not feel embarrassed when it happens.

When you are ready, the doctor slowly inserts the
gastroscope into your mouth. The gastroscope is thinner than your
little finger. You will feel it passing over your tongue. The doctor
may ask you to swallow when the gastroscope reaches the back of your
throat. Swallowing helps to allow the gastroscope to pass easily into
the oesophagus.
There will be no obstruction to your breathing during the procedure.
You can breathe normally. Let the nurse know if you have a blocked
nose. She will give you medicine to help you breathe easier.
You will feel some distension of your abdomen, as the gastroscope
will "blow" air into your stomach to allow the doctor to
look into it. There may be discomfort as the scope passes through
your stomach and into the duodenum.
The doctor may decide to take a sample of your stomach lining for
examination. This is called a biopsy and is done quickly and painlessly.
When the examination is finished, the gastroscope is removed. Do not
get up immediately, but allow the nurse to assist you. She will help
you to tidy yourself and instruct you on what to do. |

| Preparation for a gastroscopy |
| |
|
|
You need to fast for at least
6 hours before your procedure. This is to ensure that your stomach
is empty and you do not vomit during the procedure. Having an
empty stomach also ensures that your doctor is able to see clearly
and do a complete and thorough examination.

| It is recommended that you wear loose clothing. You will not
be required to change into a procedure gown. |
