| Who
Should Undergo Screening For Colorectal Cancer? |
| |
| Screening recommendations are tailored to the person's
risk of developing colorectal cancer, which will fall into "high-risk"
or " average-risk". |
| |
| High-risk: People considered to
be at high-risk for colorectal cancer include those with one or more
of the following risk factors: - |
| |
 |
a family member with colorectal cancer. |
 |
a history of a large polyp, or many polyps. |
 |
long-term Colitis or Inflammatory Bowel Disease. |
|
| |
| These patients should be on follow-up with a colorectal
surgeon or gastroenterologist, who will be able to monitor their condition,
and offer the necessary treatment options. |
| |
| Average-risk: If you have none
of the risk factors listed above, you are considered to be "average-risk".
Because there is a higher chance of developing colorectal cancer as
we grow older, screening is recommended starting from the age of 50
years. |
