Colorectal Cancer Screening

Who Should Undergo Screening For Colorectal Cancer?

Screening recommendations are tailored to the person's risk of developing colorectal cancer, which will fall into "high-risk" or " average-risk".

High-risk: People considered to be at high-risk for colorectal cancer include those with one or more of the following risk factors: -

a family member with colorectal cancer.
a history of a large polyp, or many polyps.
long-term Colitis or Inflammatory Bowel Disease.

These patients should be on follow-up with a colorectal surgeon or gastroenterologist, who will be able to monitor their condition, and offer the necessary treatment options.

Average-risk: If you have none of the risk factors listed above, you are considered to be "average-risk". Because there is a higher chance of developing colorectal cancer as we grow older, screening is recommended starting from the age of 50 years.
