Colorectal Cancer Screening

What Is Colorectal Cancer Screening?

Colorectal cancer screening is a process involving special tests that enable early detection of colorectal cancer. There are several types of investigations that can be done. Screening increases the chances for early detection and survival.

What are the screening tests available?

Your doctor is the best person to advise you on the screening option that is the most suitable for you. It is not unusual to undergo more than one test.

One of the following tests may be ordered: -

Faecal Occult Blood Test (FOBT)
This is a simple test for blood in your stools. Stool samples are collected for 2 days and tested for the presence of hidden, or occult blood.

A negative result means that no blood has been detected and FOBT can be repeated on a yearly basis.

A positive result means blood has been detected. There are several other conditions, apart from colon cancer, that can cause this. Your doctor will arrange other tests to determine the reason for the blood.

Barium X-ray
This is a special X-ray procedure during which you are given a barium enema. The barium coats the inside of the colon and X-rays are taken. The X-rays will reveal any irregularity in the outline of your colon.

Sigmoidoscopy
This is an endoscopic procedure in which a doctor inserts a tube-like instrument called a scope into your rectum and lower part of your colon, through the anal opening. The scope has a light and camera and it transmits images to a monitor. Your doctor is able to visually examine the inside of your rectum and sigmoid colon.

Colonoscopy
This is similar to a sigmoidoscopy except that the doctor will examine the whole length of your colon and rectum.

These scope procedures also allow the doctor to perform biopsies and simple treatment if polyps are seen.
