General Advice

What is the general advice?

There are 3 areas to look at to maintain healthy living and prevent worsening of Chronic Liver Disease.

1. Diet

Eat healthy and well-balanced meals.
Take small meals more frequently. This may help if you often feel like vomiting.
Take less salt and protein. Follow your doctor's advice strictly on this.
Ask your doctor before taking vitamins or supplements.

2. Establish good lifestyle habits

Have enough rest. Do only what you can manage if you are easily tired.
Exercise regularly. Light exercise (e.g. walking) is recommended.
Inform your doctor of your condition so that he/she can prescribe you the appropriate medication.
Inform your dentist about your condition as you may bleed more easily than usual.
Your doctor may have prescribed laxative syrup. This must be taken to ensure that you have 2 or 3 soft bowel movements a day. This reduces the absorption of toxic substances from the intestines.

3. What to avoid

Alcohol - this is toxic to your liver.
Smoking - releases toxins which have to pass through your liver.
Drugs including herbs that may be toxic - check with your doctor first.
Contaminated food that may carry infections, including Hepatitis A.
Certain industrial chemicals can cause liver injury - check with your doctor.
