Screening For Breast Cancer

Breast Awareness

Women breasts come in different sizes and shapes. They undergo mild changes during each menstrual period and during pregnancy. It is important for women to be familiar with the feel and shape of their breasts, so that they can be aware of what is and is not normal for themselves.

Women above 30 years old should learn to do Breast Self Examination (BSE). They should perform BSE regularly - once a month, a week after each menstrual period. Women who no longer have periods should perform BSE on a fixed date each month. As BSE does not replace mammography, women who are within the screening age group should not forgo screening mammograms, which is the most well–proven means of increasing breast cancer survival.

About 90% of breast lumps that are detected through BSE are usually non-cancerous. Early detection of cancerous lumps provides a higher chance of successful treatments.
