|
| Patient Education Support Services (PESS) was formed
in September 1997 in NUH, to initiate specialised and personalised
patient education in different nursing specialties. |
| |
| To date, PESS boasts a team of nurses in the following
disciplines: |
| |
 |
Asthma care |
 |
 |
Breast care |
 |
Diabetes care |
 |
Gastrointestinal
care |
 |
Head and Neck care |
 |
Neuroscience care |
 |
Lactation care |
 |
Orthopaedic care
|
 |
Pain care |
 |
Stroke care |
 |
Wound & Stoma
care |
|
| |
| The PESS team provides counselling, caregiver training,
practical skills teaching and discharge planning for patients and
their families. Patient education materials are developed to assist
patients understanding of their health condition and provide
a reinforcement of the information that has been given. PESS nurses
are also involved in clinical teaching rounds, conducting courses
and in-service for nurses, and research to look into improving standards
of nursing practice. |
| |
| PESS has contributed to a variety of exciting and
challenging projects within the realm of promoting patient education
to a higher level. Part of the efforts in this area include: |
| |
 |
The setting up of a patient resource
center called the Patient
Education Hub. |
 |
The establishment of guidelines
for the development of patient education materials. |
 |
Organising patient education
conferences at regional and international levels to further
push patient education to the frontiers of patient services. |
|
| |
| PESS is run on the motivation of being able to enhance
the total experience for the patient who comes through the doors of
NUH. It is this that enables a team of nurses to pursue a dream and
see its fulfillment in the way a patient embraces his/her health condition
and learns to manage it at home. |
