Sexuality and the Women with Cancer
Ms Wong Wan Hua
Nurse Clinician (Breast Care)
Cancer affects one's physical, emotional, spiritual and sexual well-being. The World Health Organization (WHO) identified sexual health as an integration of physical, emotional, mental and social aspects of life. Today, despite the integral role that human sexuality plays throughout a person's entire life span, sexuality remains a taboo subject for both health care professionals and patients. This is especially so for women, when coupled with the need for treatment resulted in an altered body image.
This talk will address the emotional and physical impact that cancer and treatment may have on the feminine individual’s sexual health. It gives an overview on the coping mechanisms to handle sexual problems caused by cancer treatment, effective communication about sexuality between the woman and her partner, as well as learning to seek support from others. In addition, there will be a 'question checklist' for the doctor to address some of the sexual and intimacy issues that treatment can bring about.
Marital Relationship after Breast Cancer
Ms Yong Lee Ling
Senior Medical Social Worker
Sometimes a crisis that threatens our lives can be equally traumatising not just us, but our families and loved ones as well. This talk hopes to raise awareness on how a marital relationship can impact the individual’s ability to cope with a medical crisis, and vice versa. Besides surviving the disease, some considerations should be given to the marital relationship - the foundation of family and what the couple can do to move on with their lives.
