Maternal-Fetal Medicine (Antenatal Diagnostics)

Serving as the one stop prenatal screening programme, the Antenatal Diagnostic Centre (ADC) is the nerve centre of the Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine.

ADC aims to provide parents with the knowledge to make informed decisions about their pregnancy using advanced 3D ultrasound and genetic testing. Ultrasonography is performed by dedicated sonographers with more than 12 years of experience.

Recently, ADC has developed two new tests for faster and early detection of Down’s Syndrome. The first test combines ultrasound with maternal blood test and is performed at 12 weeks of pregnancy to calculate the risk of Down’s Syndrome. Within 24 hours, the couple will know if their child is at higher or lower risk of Down’s Syndrome.

The second test is the Fluorescence In-Situ Hybridisation (FISH) Next Day test where couple can perform a diagnostic test to determine if their child is having Down’s Syndrome. Typically, pregnant women can choose to do chorion villus sampling or amniocentesis combined with FISH test. The laboratory results is usually available within 48 hours. These tests are now conveniently integrated in ADC.

Come end 2007, a faster groundbreaking Down's Syndrome test, FlashFish will be available to all expectant mothers in NUH. With this advancement, Down's Syndrome test only require a mere 2 hours. This test is developed by a group of doctors led by Senior Consultant, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, A/Prof Mahesh Choolani.
