Education Activities for Children with Diabetes
Diabetes Camps
Children with diabetes mellitus can learn about their condition in a fun-filled way. We organised annual diabetes camps for children in 1996 and 1997, and subsequently the camps were jointly organised with the Diabetes Support Association of TOUCH Community Service from 1998 to 2000. For the past few years, the diabetes camps were jointly organized with our Children’s Kidney Centre.
At the camps, children with diabetes meet and learn about their condition. They were also encouraged to develop independence and confidence, and take responsibility for their own diabetes care. Peer leadership and encouragement have helped many children cope better with their diabetes. The camps were also important avenues for the diabetic children to get to know other diabetics, and for the healthcare providers to get to know the children and their families better.
Workshops for diabetes education
Teenagers with diabetes face a unique set of problems - not only do they have to cope with their condition, they also face many psychosocial and physiological stresses and changes which have significant impact on their diabetes control. A workshop for diabetic teenagers was organised for our adolescent patients during the school holidays in 2001, which aim to address some of these issues. Case studies with various medical and psychosocial scenarios, and debates on various medical and social dilemmas related to diabetes were prepared, which provided a stimulating and effective learning process.
We have also organised a workshop for our young children with diabetes and their parents on 7th Dec 2002. The children learnt about the food pyramid through games and quiz, and the parents attended discussions on food labels with the dietitian, and sick day management with the doctors.
Physical Exercise is encouraged in diabetes, as it improves diabetes control, maintain good health, and relieve psychological stress. The Children's Medical Institute and the Sports Medicine and Research Centre of Singapore Sports Council conducted a workshop on Sports Science for our diabetic teenagers on 9 Dec 2002.
We will continue to organize useful workshops for our young patients.
