The inborn errors of metabolism refer to medical conditions which arise from defective chemical activities in the body. Inborn errors of metabolism are individually rare, but collectively common. Presentation can occur at any age, even in adulthood. The incidence in the United States, is estimated to be about 1 in 5000 live births, collectively.

Metabolic diseases can affect any organ or body system. Some of the initial problems include:

  1. Slow development
  2. Loss of previous acquired developmental skills
  3. Poor growth
  4. Recurrent vomiting, lethargy, poor feeding and seizures
