Our interventional cardiology services include percutaneous coronary interventions, closure of congenital intracardiac shunts, dilatation of narrowed heart valves, as well as peripheral interventions. As a major tertiary healthcare institution, we specialise in these complex procedures, which have become viable alternatives to open heart surgeries.
We perform more than 1,900 diagnostic and 1,400 coronary, peripheral, valvuloplasty and congenital interventional procedures yearly.

PTCA Trend in NUH
In addition to the increase in procedural volume, we also embark on a variety of vascular interventional procedures that are not specific to the coronary arteries. These include renal and carotid artery stenting, device closure for patent foramen ovale and atrial septal defects, as well as peripheral intervention for disabling claudication or critical limb ischemia. We have also moved towards using the radial artery as the preferred access site in selected patients, thus improving patient comfort and facilitating nursing care, as well as minimising groin complications.

Device for closure of atrial septal defects
Our cardiac catheterisation laboratory is host to 4 interventional fellows each year. These fellows are an international mix from China, Philippines, Indonesia, and Myanmar. Some of our previous fellows are currently directors in their own laboratories and we continue to communicate closely with them, thus fostering a regional alliance.

Catheterisation Laboratory
We are also active in research and have published a number of studies in peer-reviewed journals. Our current research interests include the evaluation of a novel anti-CD34 coated stent that promotes endothelialisation in patients with an acute myocardial infarction as well as the development of a novel interventional device. Plans are also underway to begin first-in-man trials evaluating new stents and drugs.
