National University Heart Centre, Singapore (NUHCS) at NUH brings together the resources, expertise and capabilities in the areas of Cardiology, Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery to better meet the needs of the growing number of patients with heart disease. Heart valve operations made faster and safer!
The Straits Times and Today newspapers reported that Assistant Professor Theodoros Kofidis, Department of Cardiac, Thoracic and Vascular Surgery, National University Heart Centre Singapore, has been granted $250, 000 by the National Research Foundation (NRF), Singapore, a government agency which promotes innovation and entrepreneurship.

Assistant Professor Kofidis will be developing a new heart valve that may be able to speed up an operation and reduce the risks to the patient. His submission was one of the nine picked by the agency and was chosen out of 136 submissions.

The development of Cardiology started with the set-up of the first Coronary Care Unit at Medical Unit II at Outram Road General Hospital. Today, the NUH Cardiac Department continues to shoulder the triple responsibilities of providing evidence-based medical care, training of undergraduates, post-graduates and paramedics, and spearheading basic and clinical research.
